About

profileI write with one purpose: to take you to places you’ve never been before. That might be a distant fantasy land, the far reaches of space, the future of earth, or simply to an idea you’ve never encountered. I’m a student of language and culture, and my stories are designed to pull you into complex worlds that challenge your perception of your own surroundings.

I write primarily speculative fiction, such as Fantasy and Sci-Fi, but my goal is to write stories so engaging, so real, that you’ll be sucked in even if you think you hate those genres. Because fiction is about more than just the genre it occupies. So what is my fiction about?

The answer lies hidden in several layers of the name of this site.

First, Cross Fire Fiction refers to the passion, the fire, of the cross and what it stands for. Not Christianity, but reckless sacrifice, radical love for one’s enemies, and, ultimately, redemption. That intersection of all that is sacred with all that is profane is the launch pad for all of my stories. It is the fountain from which an endless fountain of pain, longing, and desperate hope erupts to breathe life into my fiction.

But Cross Fire also refers to being stuck in the middle, trapped in the cross-fire. It’s a place my strange collection of opinions and mildly heretical beliefs land me quite often. I once tried negotiating that cross-fire with thoughtful and (I hope) thought provoking essays. But that approach always led to me firing bullets of my own to maintain my position. So I’ve lain down my guns for good and picked up fiction; stories, parables. This way, I can stay firmly planted in the cross-fire, the no man’s land between sides where the lines are not clearly drawn and black and white are not as distinct as the theologians would have us believe.
